The 50 yen coin features Chrysanthemum flowers, which are a symbol of the Japanese imperial family as well as a symbol of longevity and renewal. The coin was introduced in 1955 but was not originally holed in the center. The center hole was added in 1959 due to frustration from the public that it looked too much like the 100 yen coin.
