1997 was the first year this coin was minted, as the currency in Russia had shifted after the fall of the Soviet Union. The obverse features a two-headed eagle, the emblem of the Bank of Russia. The two-headed eagle is a symbol of the history of Russia, in particular its connection to the Byzantine Empire.
