The first atoms were created about 380,000 years after the Big Bang, when the universe cooled enough for electrons to combine with protons and neutrons. The most common elements created in this process were hydrogen and helium, which make up over 99% of the mass of ordinary matter in the universe. Heavier elements such as carbon, oxygen and iron were produced later in nuclear reactions in stars or during their explosions.
