This piece reinterprets Malcolm Brown's iconic photo 'Burning Monk.' On June 11, 1963, in Saigon, South Vietnam, a Buddhist monk named Thich Quang Duc set himself ablaze. This was a protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the U.S.-backed regime of Ngo Dinh Diem. The 66-year-old Mahayana Buddhist monk's self-immolation sought to draw international attention to Vietnam's political and social issues and ensure the struggles of Buddhists would not be ignored. 333 and 151 have deep symbolic meanings related to this piece, which is why I chose them for the quantity and price.
